Whether you’re just starting, or stepping back into the classroom after a break, it can be both exciting and daunting. For many returning educators, one of the biggest challenges lies in gathering the necessary documentation needed to (re-)enter the workforce. Among these, your qualifications are paramount.
Having your qualifications in order is essential for several reasons. First, they are often required for job applications, serving as proof of your education and expertise. Second, they may be necessary for obtaining a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which ensures safety and security within educational environments. Without these documents, you may find your teaching journey stalling before even stepping foot in a classroom.
But what happens if you've misplaced these crucial certificates during your time away? Fortunately, the government offers a practical service to help you replace missing proof of qualifications, and we’re here to guide you through it!
Replacing your qualifications involves contacting your exam board to request a replacement certificate or a certified statement of results. Here’s how you can go about it:
• If you need a replacement for O levels, CSEs, GCSEs, or A levels, you'll receive a certified “statement of results” instead of a new certificate.
• For other qualifications, some boards might provide a replacement certificate.
There are five primary exam boards in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland:
• AQA
• Council for Curriculum and Examinations Assessment (CCEA)
• Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Exams (OCR)
• Welsh Joint Examinations Committee (WJEC)
• For Scottish qualifications, please contact the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
• You may need to prove your identity which could require official identification documents.
• Be prepared to pay a fee for replacement certificates or statements.
• If you're uncertain which board holds your results, consult your former school or college for guidance.
It's worth noting that if your original exam board has merged or no longer exists, current exam boards often provide support to direct you to the right place. You can find out more about this online.
This process is accessible to anyone who has taken exams under the aforementioned boards and needs verification of their qualifications. Whether your goal is to return to teaching, apply for further education, or simply have a complete record of your academic achievements, this process is here for you.
By ensuring your qualifications are in order, you’re preparing yourself for a brief and effective job search and onboarding process.
