So, you’ve secured a video interview! Congratulations. It’s time to make this interview your own. With our consultants and top tips backing you, the next few steps will be easy.

Get Organised

It’s worth finding out (well ahead of the interview), which video platform your interview will take place on. Make sure you download the software so you can test it. Most platforms will have an area where you can test your video and audio so you can be sure that it all works. By practising your call ahead of time, you can feel confident knowing you have time to fix any technical problems before you connect with the interviewer.

Check Your Lighting

When choosing where to sit for your interview, consider your light source. If the light is behind you, you’ll appear like a silhouette on your screen. To avoid this, it’s best to face a window (allowing the natural light to fall on your face).

Review Your Surroundings

Make sure you choose a quiet spot for your interview, so your interviewer can hear you clearly. Avoid any background noise like the TV or radio and check that the room doesn’t cause an echo when speaking. These things can be tested on the platform ahead of the interview. Furthermore, the items in view of your camera should be considered, keep it professional and consider what your room says about you. Many platforms offer the ability to change your background or blur it out, which can be an easy fix for these issues. However, don’t get distracted by funny backgrounds or funky filters!

Test your internet connection

Have you checked that the room where you intend to do your video interview from has a reliable internet connection? It’s worth calling a friend to test your connection and to make sure everything is working as expected.

Have a backup plan

Even with all this planning, things can still go wrong. So, make sure you have a contact number for the person who will be interviewing you give you the option to let them know you’re having problems. If you can’t get hold of them, you can always call your recruitment consultant.

Consult with your consultant

Your consultant is experienced in the work search process and interview etiquette. From dress code to insight with the company you’re applying to, your recruitment specialist is there to help you succeed! Always feel free to ask.
