Understanding DBS Checks in Education

Whilst becoming a teacher, you may have heard about the requirement for a DBS check, but understanding the different types and their importance can be confusing at first. At jjFOX, we specialise in education recruitment and want to ensure you have all the information you need to start your teaching career smoothly. Here’s a quick guide to DBS checks and what you need to know ahead of your application.

What is a DBS Check?

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a pre-employment screening to assess an individual's criminal record. It is a legal requirement for anyone working in a role that involves contact with children or vulnerable adults.

This will typically require one or two documents from Group 1 (including your Passport/ Birth Certificate/ Driving Licence etc.) and one or two documents from Group 2 (usually an address proof dated within 3 months or 12 months depending on what document you provide). You can find a detailed rundown of these required documents here.

However, for many teaching roles, you will need an enhanced DBS.

What is an Enhanced DBS Check?

This is the most comprehensive level of screening and includes:

• A search for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings

• A check against the Children's Barred List, ensuring you are not prohibited from working with children

• Additional local police information relevant to working in education.

Why Do You Need a DBS Check?

Schools and educational institutions must comply with safeguarding regulations to ensure that all staff working with children are suitable for the role. Without a valid DBS check, you will not be able to work in a school setting. Many schools will require proof of a recent check before offering employment, so it is advisable to have one in place before you begin applying for roles.

How Can You Get Your DBS Check?

At jjFOX, we make the process easy for you. If you secure an interview through us, we offer an in-house DBS check service, ensuring that you meet all the necessary requirements quickly and efficiently. This means you can focus on preparing for your new teaching role with confidence.

What follows the DBS Check?

A DBS check can last for 1 year but will need renewing. We recommend subscribing to the DBS Update Service (£13 per year, free for volunteers, making it the most cost and time-effective option). Run by the UK Government, this service keeps your DBS certificates up to date and allows employers to check its status in real-time. Employers can perform instant status checks with your consent, reducing wait times and administrative burdens. It’s important to note that for the DBS update service, individuals must register within 30 days of receiving a new DBS certificate to be eligible.

Navigating the DBS check process can be overwhelming, but it is a crucial step in your journey as a teacher. By understanding the requirements and securing your Enhanced DBS check early, you can ensure a smooth transition into your new career.
