How to Prepare for the Compliance Process

From secondary school Supply Teachers to college Lecturers, all UK educators or those working in an educational environment are required to pass safeguarding checks to ensure the safety of young people. This process, whilst necessary, can often appear daunting, especially to Early Career Teachers (ECTs) who may not have been through the process before and are organising their documents for the first time.

Being prepared with the right documentation not only speeds up the registration process but also shows you are professional and ready to work.

Here's our guide to make your transition smoother:

DBS Certificate

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate is a necessity for most education settings. This certificate instantly tells your prospective employer whether you have any criminal convictions or restrictions, in order for them to make an informed decision as to your suitability for the role. An enhanced DBS certificate registered with the update service is usually required prior to a position within these settings.

Your Right-to-Work

To legally work in the UK, you need to provide evidence of your right to work. For British or Irish Citizens, this will be your passport or birth certificate along with proof of your National Insurance number. For non-British nationals, your visa, share code or other valid immigration documents will be required. Ensuring your right to work documentation is up to date is critical for any employment to start.

Prepared References

Professional references back up your application and offer a glimpse into your work ethic, experience and sociability. Coming from peers you’ve worked with; these add validity to your career and character. Typically, two references are required which can include a HR contact, managers or supervisors from your current or previous employment. Preparing these contacts in advance ensures they’re ready upon request.

Proving your Identity

A valid passport, driving licence or national identity card serves as proof of who you are. Alongside this, proof of address for example a utility bill or bank statement is required dated within the last 3 months. Please note that it’s essential the name and address on these documents are consistent across the board to avoid any discrepancies. A proof of name change will be required if there are any discrepancies, for example a Marriage Certificate.

You may be required to complete an online identity / liveness check to validate your identity and right to work.

Qualifications and Certificates

To educate in your field, it’s important to show that you are qualified. Be ready to present your teaching qualification, degree certificates and professional qualifications. Any relevant training certificates you have can also be beneficial. These documents are crucial in highlighting your capability and suitability for various teaching roles.
