8 Reasons to return to teaching

If you’ve taught previously and left to pursue a new career, how many times have you been asked if you’d ever consider returning to teaching? You may have batted the idea away, but somewhere in your mind you hear the words “never say never!” Returning to teaching might be easier than you expect and we’ve collated just a few reasons why now could be a great time to take action.

1. Students need you

It’s been a tough 18 months for students across the nation and, now more than ever, they really do need you. Class sizes are increasing and there’s a shortage of teaching staff, your skills as a former teacher are definitely being missed and you could help those students most affected get back on track.

2. You’ll make a difference

Wherever we work we like to feel we’re making a difference, however as a teacher you can be certain you’ll have a positive impact on many young people who sit in your classroom. Teachers make a difference through the work they do every single day; they inspire, encourage and motivate students. I think we can all agree it’s a fabulous achievement to watch young people realise their potential.

3. You can refresh your knowledge

If you’ve been out of teaching for a while there’s lots you can do to re-familiarise yourself with teaching. Pretty much everything you need can be found online, whether that be teacher training sessions or refresher courses to jog your memory and get back into the flow of teaching. The Department for Education ‘Returning to Teaching’ page on their website signposts a number of helpful resources, so it’s worth having a look on there.

4. You’ll have a new perspective

Having left teaching you may have moved into a whole new industry; this can bring with it not only a new perspective on dealing with a teaching role, but a great set of transferable skills which can help shape and drive your teaching strategy. Skills such as time management, leadership skills and creative problem-solving will all come in handy as you head back to class.

5. You’ll know what to expect

Now we’re not saying it’s like riding a bike, however you will likely find that your previous experience and knowledge will come flooding back to you. You’re no longer a new teacher as you’ve been in the classroom and done it all before; only now you’re a little older, wiser and have experience of life both in and out of the classroom.

6. You’re not the only one!

According to the Department for Education, thousands of former teachers return to teaching each year; you’re not alone. The return of teachers is happening more than you think, don’t feel like the moment has passed you by as it’s definitely the time to pursue a route back to the classroom.

7. There’s more than one teaching route to consider

If returning to teaching in a full-time capacity is stopping you make the move, it’s worth remembering there are opportunities for part-time teaching, supply teaching or tutoring too. This makes the prospect of teaching far more flexible and you should find a route to suit you.

8. You have to admit, there are some perks to the job

First, there’s the holidays, which are a well-deserved perk! There’s great job satisfaction which comes from teaching; it’s a rewarding vocation where you can help your students achieve great things during their education. Teaching also offers excellent job security, which is a definite bonus in this current climate of uncertainty.
