We've made it through our "different", quieter Christmas and we're now standing at the start of a new year. For many of us, this is a time for reflection and resolution. But how do we make sure we start the year positively and carry this positivity through the next twelve months.
The start of a new year is a great time to think about making changes to your life that will help improve your health and wellbeing. You can call these resolutions, however, most people don’t tend to stick to resolutions for the long-term and then feel bad that they’ve not ticked them off their list! So, let’s instead look at a few ways we can make some positive changes, without a long-term commitment.
Take a look inside your wardrobe or your drawers. Do you feel frustrated when you look in there? Maybe you can’t believe how disorganised it looks. It’s time to make a change! Go through all the items in your wardrobe, pull everything out. If there’s anything you haven’t worn or used for a year, it’s time to bag it up and donate it to your local charity shop. Not only will this give you more room and bring organisation to your clothing, but it also means someone else can benefit from your donation.
Now, this shouldn’t be something we think about as a one-off or just at the beginning of the year; this is definitely an ongoing commitment to yourself. It’s all about doing something specific for you, whether to support your physical wellbeing or your mental wellbeing. Invest in yourself by spending time in the morning or evening reading or watching something that uplifts you. Get rid of any stress in a way that works for you; whether that be a long soak in the bath or a run around the park. Don’t beat yourself up, imagine if your friend were in your position; you’d support and help them. Do the same for yourself. Last but by no means least, take time to laugh. It may sound like a cliché, but it really is the best medicine.
Yes, we may be all too aware that there was a lot of “trying something new” going on last year; so let’s make the new stuff different for 2021. Keep it simple! Why not book a trip to a new city, or just explore your own town or city - we can all be guilty of never looking at what’s on our doorstep. Maybe even order an oat milk latte instead of your usual coffee. Of course, you can still book that skydive if you’re looking for real excitement!
Go grab your tomorrow!
